Emergency

The North Okanagan region has a 911 telephone service and works in conjunction with Kelowna Telecom dispatch team. The communications centre is located in Kelowna and is based on a cutting-edge police computer systems, new equipment from BC Tel and an amalgamated 911/RCMP dispatch team.

Fire

The North Okanagan region has nine fire halls and over 250 firefighters. Only the Vernon Fire Department is a composite hall consisting of paid career and volunteer firefighters. The Okanagan Landing Firehall is run on a contractor basis and the remaining seven fire halls are strictly paid-on-call volunteer. Many of the services, such as fire inspection and fire prevention officers as well as dispatch, are regionalized and provided by the North Okanagan Regional District.

Police (RCMP)

There are Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachments in the four major cities within the region.

  • Vernon / Coldstream Detachments:

The Vernon / Coldstream detachment has 52 RCMP members and 17 support staff. The detachment operates fully staffed vehicles and covers the Greater Vernon, Coldstream and surrounding areas. All emergency calls go through the 911 dispatcher for the area and any non-emergency calls during office hours will go to the individual detachments. After hours all non-emergency calls will go through the dispatch at Kelowna Telecom.

  • Armstrong / Spallumcheen Detachment:

This detachment currently has nine RCMP members and operates with three administrative staff members. There are five vehicles in this detachment and it covers the Armstrong and Spallumcheen areas.

  • Enderby & District Detachment:

This detachment has eight RCMP members and operates with one full-time and one part-time administrative member. The detachment has four vehicles and covers the Enderby and District areas including out to Mabel Lake and Mara Lake.

  • Lumby Detachment:

This detachment has five RCMP members and two administrative staff members. There are four vehicles in this detachment, and coverage is provided over a large area from Lumby to Lavington and the Aberdeen areas.

Ambulance

Each of the major centres in the North Okanagan has ambulance services. Emergency calls to 911 are routed to a dispatch centre in Kamloops, which coordinates the movement of all ambulances in the region. For non-emergency calls Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby, and Vernon can call locally to (250) 542-4303, which will transfer the call to the Kamloops dispatch.
